Poetic PortraitsPoetic Portraits is an ongoing series of conceptual self-portraits illustrating pieces of poetry that I have written. Long before the photograph is ever taken, ever conceived, the image is being written on the paper in the form of a poem, each painstakingly crafted over a period of days, weeks, even months until refined into a self-sustaining work of art. Only then do I then draw the image out from the writing. The metaphor becomes the script for the photograph, and my body, the physical performance of the verse.
I say this series is ongoing because it will likely never stop. Since this series began, the marriage of both my life’s text and the self-portrait has become the great meditation of my life, an endless pool of autobiographical reflection, both in the underlying concept and the execution. This is my most personal series of all, using my own body, writing, and photography as both the inspirations and instruments for my work. |
